To strengthen and lead our Real-World Evidence (RWE) department, we are looking to fill the position of Head of RWE scientists.

The world of drug development is changing; the evolving external environment increases our need to deliver differentiated solutions to specific patient populations, enhance access to those solutions and better demonstrate their value to society.


To achieve this vision, we aim to maximize the value provided by “Real-World Data” (RWD) from the health care system. Thus, we and our external stakeholders will gain a deeper understanding of unmet needs in those patient populations and the realities of current clinical practice.


Your role summary


The primary goal of this function is to provide leadership to the RWE Scientist Team.

As the Head of RWE Scientists, you will support in the design, execution and interpretation of RWE projects using RWD that contribute to our understanding of the natural course of diseases, treatments and patient outcomes, that:

  • help drive strategic internal decision-making thereby empowering differentiating R&D activities
  • support external decision making across multiple key stakeholders’ groups such as policy makers, regulators, payers, prescribers and patients
  • contribute to the wider medical understanding of specific diseases and patient (sub-populations)

Critical to the role will be ensuring scientific publication of RWE studies adds maximum value to healthcare decision makers; application of the customer mindset and fundamentals of evidence based critical appraisal to pressure test any relevant value message.

You aim to support key components of UCB’s Patient Value Strategy through the exploration of new perspectives that can augment ‘traditional’ clinical data, thereby driving emerging opportunities designed to reduce the time to patient access to new medicines.


Your responsibilities


Your main deliverables will be to:

  • Lead a team of RWE Scientists (external resources included), set priorities and team objectives, monitor and evaluate performance in line with strategy
  • Support shaping the RWE practice design by means of capability building through personal development opportunities for the RWE practice and beyond, through guidance, coaching and mentoring and by recruiting in case of organizational gaps


  • Help setting the vision, mission and transversal objectives addressing long term strategic imperatives
  • Actively contribute to cross-functional business projects
  • Provide subject matter expertise and strategic leadership to the wider RWE community
  • Contribute to the interpretation of analysis in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Maintain strategic oversight of internal and external publications in line with the Strategic publication plan


  • Partner with external thought leadership in academia, healthcare delivery and across industry to gain new insights that enable UCB to remain at the cutting edge of RWE
  • Utilize internal and external networks to persuade, influence and build advocacy for environmental changes aligned with UCB business objectives, including but not limited to, shaping the healthcare decision making process in response to increasing availability of RWE.


Your background and competencies


You hold a MSc degree in epidemiology or relevant scientific discipline, ideally a PhD.

You can demonstrate publication record in relevant peer-reviewed scientific and/or clinical journals.   


You have built at least 8 years of experience in successfully delivering global and/or local RWE projects from conceptualization to publication within the pharmaceutical industry, or with a recognized expert consultancy, or with an academic center of excellence.


You possess both an open mind and a hands-on and "walk the talk" attitude.

You have a genuine interest in supporting UCB patient populations, impeccable ethics and standards.

You describe yourself as engaged and driven. You are experienced in managing teams, empowering and inspiring others a multicultural environment.
