Help us transform patients' lives.

At UCB, we put our heart, soul, and skills into making a difference for people living with severe disease. Working together to push the boundaries, we blend the best of our talents to unlock innovation.  Will you join us in our pioneering adventure?

The drug development process is, beyond doubt, a long and complex journey where success is never guaranteed. Fortunately, advances in digitization and IT technology are increasingly transforming the ways in which research is conducted.

Through automation of lab activities, ever-larger amounts of raw data can be collected, managed, and analyzed in exciting new ways, providing insights that were previously unimaginable. At UCB, we strongly believe the rapid adoption of (automation) technologies will be fundamental to maintaining and increasing the success rate of our drug discovery efforts.

Within the global UCB IT organization, the IT Early Solutions Smart Automation contributes to this vision by engaging UCB R&D across all scientific disciplines. To extend our activities, we are looking for a unique individual to strengthen our team:

As IT Project Manager Smart Automation, you will bolster the digitization of essential R&D activities at the site in Braine, Belgium. You will implement and support transformative automation projects and as you grow in your role and in close partnership with your stakeholders you will increasingly have the opportunity to co-create the future vision and convert this vision into concrete initiatives.

Your main responsibilities

As the IT Project Manager Smart Automation, you will:

  • Engage with UCB Scientists, your direct colleagues, UCB IT partners and vendors to deploy cutting edge lab automation software solutions and robotics systems in support of UCB drug discovery efforts.

  • Leverage your technical skills to ensure the continued integration of lab instrumentation and UCB data management solutions, e.g. through vendor-provided API’s or by working with colleagues and developers to co-create bespoke middleware.

  • Make an impact on UCB research by enabling seamless transfer of data from the lab to in-house data science platforms or cloud solutions.

  • Influence how scientists and IT work together by demonstrating how our powerful automation and data management platforms can be used to deliver solutions in a highly agile and timely manner, in lock step with the rapidly evolving requirements of research.

  • Apply your creativity and curiosity to identify technical solutions to challenging research problems or when diagnosing issues with existing IT solutions.

  • Apply your can-do attitude and technical know-how to draft clear plans prior to executing projects.

  • Help your colleagues in continually documenting and mapping the current and future technology landscape within UCB research.

Your profile

  • You have a degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, (bioscience) engineering, biomedical sciences, … and you have a first hands-on experience with technology solutions in an R&D related setting.

  • You are keen on working in a multi-disciplinary environment where you combine hands-on IT skills with a genuine interest in healthcare and biopharmaceutical research.

  • You are eager to be ‘boots on the ground’, engaging directly with your stakeholders in their familiar working environment.

  • Even without being an expert from day one, you quickly adopt new tools that could assist you in your activities. You do not shy away from building simple e.g. instrument log analysis scripts in Powershell or Linux or using VM’s, Docker containers and open-source tools to address urgent research requirements in a timely manner.

  • You have a demonstrable experience with tools used in software development and/or scientific data analysis, e.g. (Power)shell, Python, .Net/C#, R, JS, … and you know how to leverage RESTful API’s to interact with data management and automation systems.
