To strengthen our Patient Support & Medical Information Science team, based in our Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium , we are looking to fill the position of:


Medical Data Insights Lead


Within the Medical Affairs Practice, the Patient Support & Medical Information Science team is playing a crucial role in partnering with Patient Value Operations (PVO) & Units (PVU) to build, operationalize and enable UCB’s medical scientific data strategy empowered by innovative technology.

The Medical Data Insights Lead will act as a trusted partner connecting regularly with the different PVUs, PVO, RWE Practice, Clinical Development Practice and IT starting with data from our medical information system and patient support programs, mobilizing other medical scientific data or public available health data to identify analytics opportunities in the medical scientific area that can contribute to build patient value and patient experience insights using modern techniques including AI that inform our patients and our business.

Data as an enterprise asset is one of our core principles, which means that you will master the medical data foundational capabilities and medical data flows for and around medical information and patient support programs.

You will be accountable for driving information and data architecture decisions unlocking the value of the medical data value through AI initiatives.

You will be creating an and acting in highly motivated, multi-disciplinary team across driven by a passion to improve insight generation through advanced data science methods. You will liaise and engage with a wide range people of expertise such as the analysis / interpretation of medical datasets, artificial intelligence (including machine learning), data mining and visualization methods.

Your desire to motivate others by impactful communication and to absorb views of partners is key to collaborate in a global networking environment.


In collaboration with all relevant stakeholders (mainly Team, Virtual Team, Senior Management, PVUs, PVOps, Practices and Geographies):

•            Using predictive modelling and other advanced analytical methods to create insights to optimize medical information and patient support activities and inform patient, HCPs, customers and our business

•            Identify and implement innovative analytical solutions, which will enable the exploration of medical information, patient support or other health and medical data

•            In collaboration with other experts design and lead the implementation of analytical environments

•            Create, further develop and align in collaboration with other groups in and outside the organization data standards and analytical methods for medical information and patient support programs

•            Understand content and structure of medical information, patient support and other health data and make it available for analysis;

•            Connect to colleagues in Medical Affairs across UCB, in order to facilitate initiatives, or to identify and anticipate future technology opportunities and capabilities;

•            During your communication with experts and leaders in UCB demonstrate and communicate the value associated with analytical techniques and solutions

•            Lead, drive and contribute to projects that implement new or further advanced methods and tools in order automate medical information or patient support or enable advanced analytics

•            Interact with various people in UCB to understand their aspiration




Education Level

Master's Degree



              Candidates must hold an advanced degree (or have equivalent experience) in bioinformatics / computer science / applied mathematics with skills in the following areas:

•            Science. Strong scientific leadership combined with flexibility, genuine intellectual curiosity, ideation and eagerness to contribute are key elements of the position.

•            Excellent understanding of Medical Affairs concepts, knowledge of life science and medicine and a passion to see the results of your work improving the lives of patients.

•            Excellent communication skills to ensure alignment between computational and life scientists, physicians as well as management.

•            Considerable experience in text-based unstructured data.

•            Demonstrable experience and passion for machine learning, data mining and data visualization, preferably applied to biomedical analytical problems with excellent knowledge of the main data types used in biopharmaceutical medical scientific data.

•            Deep theoretical understanding and real hands-on experience with a wide range of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods, including e.g. gradient boosting, random forests, variational autoencoders, convolutional neural networks. Additional knowledge of Bayesian networks and Bayesian inference techniques (e.g. belief propagation, likelihood weighting) would be beneficial.

•            Strong practical experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow). Additional experience with high performance cloud computing services (e.g. Amazon AWS) would be beneficial.

•            Deep technical knowledge of relevant scripting and analytics software, including R and Python and confidence in programming in a Linux / HPC environment, including shell scripting (bash, tcsh). Additional knowledge of C++ would be beneficial.

•            Identifies and assesses risk, and recommends and incorporates appropriate risk mitigation activities

Creates and implements patient-focused and patient-driven solutions that engage patients and internal/external stakeholders to understand the patient’s disease journey, finds solutions to their needs, and makes UCB the patient-preferred biotech leader
