To strengthen our Pharma Sciences department, based in our hub in Braine l’Alleud, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of: Associate Scientist within our Chemical Process Research and Development (CPR&D).


As a UCB Associate Scientist, you like to work in an environment where you can:  

  • Develop safe, innovative, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective manufacturing chemical processes for small molecule Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
  • Devise and perform the necessary chemical synthesis (and other) experiments and will characterize their outcome by mean of analytical and characterization methods (IPCs, PAT), in order to generate knowledge and understanding of the process.
  • Be involved in the transfer of your processes to pilot plant and commercial manufacturing facilities.


As a UCB Associate Scientist, you will contribute by:

  • Developing safe, environmentally-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective chemical processes to support clinical trials and commercial manufacture of APIs.
  • Literature searching to understand prior art and complete knowledge on experimental work.
  • Performing lab experiments (100 mg to multi-kg) to generate process understanding and deliverables (e.g. material, mass balance, fate of impurities…)
  • Being a member of the team transferring the process developed in the laboratory to pilot plant and/or commercial manufacturing facilities both at UCB and at partner organizations.
  • Troubleshooting of process/manufacturing issues, supported by labwork.
  • Performing routine analyses independently (HPLC, GC, NMR…) to control processes, intermediates and final products.
  • Reporting results and conclusion (ELN, Scientific reports).



Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:

  • Master with 0-3 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry or fine chemical industry.
  • Knowledge of organic chemistry
  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of chemical engineering related to unit operations and scale-up
  • Practical expertise in the laboratory, running a variety of chemical transformations and purifications techniques
  • Good understanding of analytical techniques (NMR, HPLC, GC, mass spectrometry).
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of chemistry searching tools (Scifinder, Reaxys).
  • Fluent in French, knowledge of English.


Desirable skills and experience, or strong wish to develop oneself in some of those topics:

  • Kinetic modeling
  • Knowledge of statistical tools, Design of Experiment principles
  • Practical parallel experimentation
  • Work at multi-kg scale.
  • Process Analytical Technologies (FBRM, PVM, ReactIR, Raman).
  • Biotransformations.
