Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an exciting new small-molecule modality that will expand the target portfolio and a key investment for UCB. The head of TPD data science will be responsible for formulating, driving, and implementing the strategy of how analysis and interpretation of multimodal data supports the establishment and the operation of a targeted protein degradation platform, enables the successful execution of therapeutic TPD projects and creates differentiated value for our molecules.

The job spans collection and management of data, development of analytical methods and application of advanced data analytics across a wide range of modalities, including genetics, gene expression, proteomics, functional genomics, high content screening and structural data as required to support early stage drug discovery activities in a targeted protein degradation modality.  Biological interpretation and communication of results in drug discovery project teams are an integral part of the scope. The role will be supported by an international team of data scientists, IT, and drug design experts that will contribute metrically to the projects


Primary Responsibilities of the Position

  • Formulate, communicate, and drive a strategy across global and multi-functional teams on how data sciences will help develop a differentiated TPD platform.
  • Provide support and guidance (leadership where relevant) to new target identification, target validation, screening data analysis, etc. through the functional interpretation of omics data.
  • Prepare, process and interpret data from omics and other high dimensional modalities.
  • Develop approaches to utilize state of the art tools and technologies, or develop new methods where appropriate, to enable the above.
  • Accountability for achieving project milestones and delivering on objectives.
  • Drive scientific excellence and technology evaluations to maximize impact on the program and projects.
  • Provide strong scientific thinking, develop hypotheses and drive scientific learnings on projects.
  • Ensure impactful project contributions through effective internal and external collaboration.



Essential Requirements

  • PhD scientist with 10+ years of applicable experience, preferably in industry, with excellent scientific track record.
  • A solid understanding of statistics, data mining, machine learning, Bayesian networks, and visualization of biological data types and the standard tools used in these domains.
  • Experience of pre-processing, integration and analysis of multidimensional data (e.g. gene expression, SNP, metabolomic, proteomics, epigenetic data, etc.), and deep understanding of the underlying science and technologies Experience in proteomics and related methods is a plus.
  • Expertise in methods pertinent for functional interpretation of biological data such as pathway enrichment, networks analysis, functional module detection, causal reasoning, etc.
  • Knowledge of public data sources and expertise in leveraging available external data to answer specific drug discovery questions.
  • Ability to interpret results based on biomedical knowledge and to communicate conclusions and hypothesis to drug discovery scientists.
  • Ability to discuss experimental design from a data perspective to optimize chances to obtain actionable results
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently but also to leverage expertise within the larger organization as required
  • Ability to formulate, communicate, and drive a strategy across global and multi-functional teams.
  • Good people management skills, with direct responsibility of 1-2 FTEs and leadership skills to engage resources across the organization
  • Education and Experience:  PhD
