Principal Scientist – Targeted Protein Degradation

Bedford, MA

Beryllium is a wholly owned subsidiary of UCB and integral to the UCB New Medicines R&D organization. UCB is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of innovative medicines and solutions to transform the lives of people living with severe diseases in immunology and neurology.

Beryllium provides innovative strategies and solutions in protein biochemistry, structural biology and cell biology to perform novel drug discovery. Our Bedford, MA facility has openings for several Senior Research Scientists in Functional Biology. The successful candidates will have a background in both cell based and biochemical assays with direct experience with developing and optimizing assays across different formats.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and execution of functional biology approaches to evaluate targeted protein degradation. approaches, including assessment of target and E3 ligase biology, ubiquitin proteasome pathway, complex protein dynamics and downstream function in physiologically relevant assays.
  • Drive implementation of technology developments assisting the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of potential therapeutics.
  • Provide strong scientific thinking, develop hypotheses and drive scientific learnings on projects.
  • Ensure impactful project contributions through effective internal and external collaboration

Education and Experience:

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in applicable field.
  • 3+ years of applicable research experience, with good scientific track record.
  • Experience of applying cellular and biochemical techniques for target validation, drug discovery screening and evaluating the mechanism of action of novel molecular entities.
  • Direct experience of the design, development, optimization and prosecution of a range of in vitro cell-based and biochemical assays in plate-based formats.  This will include experience of pharmacological analysis and statistics relevant to in vitro screens.  Experience with relevant software tools, and automation will be an advantage.
  • Experience in biochemical approaches, and advanced cell biology techniques e.g. flow cytometry, high content imaging, gene and protein expression analysis.
  • Excellent communicator, with good presentation and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently but also to thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience with the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway including monitoring the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy system and protein-protein interaction complex dynamics are a plus.
  • Experience in the use of proteomic techniques for measuring changes in protein expression, post-translational modification and protein-protein interactions.
  • Understanding of protein biochemistry, recombinant proteins and tagging schemes and protein biophysical characterization.
  • TR-FRET assay experience preferred.
  • Experience with small molecules/ligands/therapeutics in a pharma/biotech environment is a plus.
  • Experience with CRISPRi/a as well as siRNA screens is a plus.
  • Background with functional genomics and proteomics a plus.
