Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an exciting new small-molecule modality that will expand the target portfolio and a key investment for UCB. As a senior/principal scientist in our data science team you will define and lead data strategy for new technology platforms, work closely with our scientists across multiple departments and multiple research sites, and actively collaborate with external academic and industrial partners. You will be instrumental in leading computational analysis on complex data types from both internal and external sources.


The position requires a combined understanding of biology, as well as data analysis and engineering, statistics, and mathematics to enable the discovery and development of novel therapies. The job spans collection and management of data, development of analytical methods and application of advanced data analytics across a wide range of modalities, including genetics, gene expression, proteomics, functional genomics, high content screening and structural data as required to support early stage drug discovery activities in a targeted protein degradation modality. Biological interpretation and communication of results in drug discovery project teams are an integral part of the scope. The role will be supported by an international team of data scientists, IT, and drug design experts that will contribute in a matrix to the projects.


You like to work in an environment where you can:

  • Define and lead data strategy for high dimensional chemical biology platforms such as proteomics. Establish data infrastructure and workflows to facilitate the utility, analysis, and visualization of experiments as part of the targeted protein degradation data platform.
  • Derive insights from data to drive decisions on targets and molecules. This includes facilitating MoA elucidation, deriving focused screening sets, hit discovery, experimental design, and frequent hitter analysis.
  • Drive scientific excellence through strategic evaluation of internal and external technology to globally impact projects and platforms. Identify, evaluate, and apply new machine learning methodologies, and develop best practice to enable data utility, integration, and data-driven decisions.

You will contribute by:

  • Ensure impactful project support and decision making through integration of both public and proprietary diverse data. 
  • Collaborate closely with experimental and data science colleagues to guide mechanism-driven drug development.


Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have a strong scientific and computational background, such as a PhD in bio/cheminformatics, computational biology/chemistry, or related discipline with at least 3 (Senior Scientist) /5 (Principal Scientist) years of work experience in a life-science environment.
  • Familiar with fundamental concepts in molecular biology, chemical biology, statistics, data mining, and bioinformatics. Experience using machine learning and natural language processing to solve project-specific problems a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and proactively apply project-tailored and generic data analysis workflows to answer scientific questions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with orthogonal data and metadata (e.g. compound, natural language, transcriptomics, and proteomics data).
  • Experience in data analysis, machine learning, and database management for complex biological and chemical data
  • Excellent scientific communication skills and effective data visualization skills.
  • Excellent written and oral English; any additional language a plus.
  • Practical knowledge of Python or R, SQL, and shell scripting in a Unix/Linux environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud-based computing environments (Azure or AWS).
  • Designing and using relational databases to answer scientific questions at scale.
  • Familiar with web-based deployment of models and results (rest, flask, js, plotly, or shiny).
