Role overview

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an exciting new small-molecule modality that will expand the target portfolio and a key investment for UCB. As a biologist on our team you will be responsible for delivering key insights into this rapidly evolving field. In particular, we are interested in candidates able to leverage advanced understanding of autophagy and lysosomal clearance mechanisms to both understand disease biology and drive the generation of novel therapeutics.

The position requires combining an understanding of the current state of  targeted protein degradation (PROTACs, molecular glues, etc.) with advanced level understanding of autophagy and lysosomal degradation mechanisms.


Primary responsibilities
•Design and execution of biological assays to assess differing routes of degradation with a focus on autophagic and lysosomal degradation mechanisms and including macroautophagy (mitophagy, CMA, etc.).
•Establish analysis pipelines for high dimensional data including proteomics, transcriptomics, and high content biology to robustly establish mechanisms of action for candidate molecules.
•Consultation with cross-functional teams on routes of degradation for identification of viable small molecule degraders
•Provide strong scientific thinking and expertise in the targeted protein degradation space.
•Assist in identifying new technologies, strategies, and external partners to drive small molecule discovery efforts


Minimal requirements:
•The successful candidate will have a strong scientific background, such as a PhD in biology, biochemistry, or related discipline with at least 3 years of work experience, preferably in industry.
•Expertise in the ubiquitin proteasome system and autophagy pathways as evidenced by publications and presentations.
•Experience in applying scientific insights into development of novel assays for evaluating protein-protein interactions, protein degradation, and/or macroautophagy or experience in high-throughput drug discovery is required.
•Excellent scientific communication and presentation skills.
•Excellent written and oral English.


Desirable skills:
•Proficiency in advanced data analytics are a plus.
•Experience in industrial HTS or automation is desirable.
•Experience in phenotypic screening (HCS or equivalent) relevant to autophagy is a plus.
•Background in neuroscience or immunology disease biology is a plus.
