Role overview

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an exciting new small-molecule modality that will expand the target portfolio and a key investment for UCB. We are seeking a highly innovative lab-based Research Scientist with responsibility for the development and execution of in vitro biochemical and cellular assays to support drug discovery in TPD. The position requires advanced understanding of the ubiquitin-proteasome and/or autophagy-lysosomal degradation mechanisms.


Primary Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Development and execution of cell-based and biochemical approaches to evaluate targeted protein degradation including assessment of target and E3 ligase biology, ubiquitin proteasome pathway activities, autophagy-lysosomal pathway, evaluation of downstream function in physiologically and biochemically relevant assays.
  • Lab based scientist responsible for assay development, execution, and data analysis to successfully progress drug discovery projects (NCE/NBE) under aggressive timelines.
  • Drive implementation of technology developments assisting the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of potential therapeutics.
  • Provide strong scientific thinking, develop hypotheses and drive scientific learnings on projects.
  • Ensure impactful project contributions through effective internal and external collaboration.


Essential Requirements:

  • PhD in applicable field and 2-4 years of research experience, preferably in industry.
  • Experience with protein degradation systems (the ubiquitin-proteasome and/or autophagy-lysosome systems), as evident by publication record or industry track record.
  • Experience of applying cellular and biochemical techniques for target validation, drug discovery screening and evaluating the mechanism of action of novel molecular entities.
  • Direct experience in the development and optimization of biochemical and cell biology assays that are optimal for individual TPD target under aggressive timelines.
  • Experience in advanced molecular biology and cell culture techniques including gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9, siRNA, lentivirus).
  • Ability to execute independently with little direction but also to thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment.


Desirable Requirements

  • Neuroscience and/or immunology background is a plus.
  • Experience in HTS or automation is a plus.
  • Experience in phenotypic screening (HCS or equivalent)
  • Experience with small molecules/ligands/therapeutics in a pharma/biotech environment.
