Post-doctoral Fellowship

Glioma infiltrating phagocytes in peritumoral epilepsy

Site: Braine L’Alleud, Belgium

At UCB everything we do starts with a simple question: “How will this make a difference to the lives of people living with severe diseases?” We do that by connecting our ground-breaking science with patients living with the physical and social burdens of autoimmune and neurological disorders. Those connections offer new perspectives, drive innovation, and offer the hope of a new generation of therapies that will help improve lives on a global scale.

Role Overview

This is a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship to evaluate the role of microglia in glioma invasion and peritumoral epilepsy. The candidate should have a strong interest in translating their knowledge in tumor biologies into novel drug targets that could make a significant impact in the quality of life of glioma patients. The project will take advantage of cutting-edge technologies including stem cell-derived brain organoids, mass spectrometry flow cytometry (CYTOF), and intravital imaging to interrogate key immune drivers of tumor growth and mechanistic links to peritumoral epilepsy. The selected candidate will drive specific studies with guidance and support from the neuroinflammation team, while working closely with the epilepsy group and external academic collaborators.

 Technical Capabilities

  • Ph.D. in Tumor Immunology, Imaging or Cancer Biology with a strong publication record.
  • Significant experience using intravital imaging is required.
  • Deep knowledge in tumor biology and hands-on development of rodent glioma models is required.
  • Experience with tissue flow cytometry and immune phenotyping is highly desirable.
  • Experience with iPSC-derived neurons and microglia is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D spheroids and iPSC-derived glial cells highly desirable.

Professional and Personal Attributes

  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills, ability to work in a matrix organization
  • A can-do attitude and exceptional attention to detail
  • Self-starter, dynamic, independent and innovative
  • Open-minded and flexible to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Spoken and written English proficiency is required.
  • French proficiency is desirable

We can offer you an informal and open working environment that does not lock scientists into structure and hierarchy.  Freedom to take space to pursue your own ideas and make a difference.  Opportunity to gain drug discovery expertise, exposure to cutting-edge technologies and global visibility through interactions with world-renown academic investigators.
