Within the UCB Development Sciences team, the Translational Biomarker and Bioanalysis department is responsible for the design and execution of bioanalytical strategies (PK, Biomarkers and Immunogenicity) throughout the whole portfolio and from the drug discovery to the drug development and post-marketing stage. Senior Principal Scientist Automation Lead



Job Nature and scope:


Accountable for the design, implementation and operational oversight of automations strategies across translational biomarkers and bioanalysis (Pharmacokinetic, Immunogenicity and Biomarker). Evaluates workflows and seeks opportunity to streamline workflows through the use of automations across Development Sciences. Ensures effective utilization of investment to implement a sustainable automated workflow in TB&B. Responsible for implementing and maintaining automated workflows in Braine and Slough. Member of Translational Biomarker and Bioanalysis Leadership Team.


Major Accountabilities:


Accountable for the assessment , design, implementation and maintenance of automated workflows for the determination of:

  • Pharmacokinetic,  immunogenicity and biomarker endpoints  across bioanalytical facilities in UK and BE.
  • Supporting preclinical and clinical development programs
  • Works together with stakeholders across automation strategies across Development Sciences to (e.g. iADME, QCP, Biotransformation…)
  • Ensure robust systems are in place to ensure analytical quality of automated assays
  • Work closely with PI and Study Directors to ensure high quality data is delivered on time
  • Build robust collaborative relationship with IT, Quality assurance and strategic alliances colleagues to ensure data continuity
  • Ensure automation workflow is compliant with quality systems including but limited to GLP, GCP and GcLP


Responsible for the development and management oversight of direct reports including input to development plans, objective setting and performance reviews

Represent UCB at external meetings including contributions at meetings by way of presentations, scientific committee representation and publications.

Education, experience and skills:
  • Has experience in designing, developing and implementing automated workflows
  • Experience evaluating workflows and determining the advantages and challenges associated with implementing automated workflows
  • Capable of evaluating the technical and operations needs and working with stakeholders to address the transformation from manual systems to automated approaches
  • Experienced across all aspects of regulatory and not regulatory bioanalysis in  support of clinical and pre-clinical trials for the development of NBEs and NCEs.
  • Experienced in development, validation and application of bioanalytical assays.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance and validation requirements (GLP, GCLP and FDA and EMA Guidelines) for Immunoassays and chromatographic assays would be advantageous.
  • Specialized in Pharmacokinetics (PK), Immunogenicity (ADA) and safety, exploratory and efficacy Biomarkers.
  • Knowledge of emerging technology platforms  and advanced automated systems.
  • At least Bachelor degree but PhD preferred.
  • Can work with internal and external stakeholders to develop novel solutions to support the strategic use of automation.
  • Has demonstrated experience recognizing potential barriers and has the soft skills to understand the challenges and influence others to ensure challenges are addressed and business needs are satisfied.
  • Experience in working with technical staff to ensure assays are developed and fit for purpose to support the biologics portfolio.
