Associate Scientist Upstream Process Sciences – Upstream Process Sciences

Description :

The Upstream Process Sciences department is recruiting an Associate Scientist in the UPS team located in Braine L'Alleud.


The primary goal of the function is to provide scientific expertise to activities relating to the early process development and late stage process optimization, transfer and clinical/commercial manufacturing support for upstream processes for UCB New Biologicals Entities (NBE). They will work in a team environment, collaborating with various process/analytical scientists. They will aid in process development and optimization, process troubleshooting, investigations, characterization. They will evaluate cellular responses to process operations, assess their effects on product quality, and determine the process scalability. The Associate Scientist will be involved in various technology development projects requiring innovative research in the area of cell culture media development and bioprocess technology. The Associate Scientist will generate documentation for experimental reports to support technology transfer and regulatory filings (Development and Technical Reports in English) and contribute to the preparation of regulatory submissions with business partners.



The main activities of this function will be:

- design experiments,

- supervise and perform daily laboratory activities related to upstream process development, understanding, optimization validation, transfers, support to process,

- provide expertise to troubleshoot upstream issues in the manufacturing environment,

- analyse results,

- verify data,

- prepare and review documentation (procedures, protocols, reports as appropriate),

- present/discuss results in project team meetings,

- liaise with other departments or external partners to ensure upstream knowledge transfer.

All these activities will be performed in compliance with UCB’s Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards and with the regulatory requirements for each development phase of the products.





- preferred: Master’s degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering or related discipline

- at least 1 year of experience working with cell culture, process development and/or cell culture media development, preferably in a similar role in the biotech industry

- Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending >70% of current and past work function in the laboratory

- An ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data is required

- ability to work in a matrix and virtual team environment under deadlines

- strong and proven laboratory skills,

- high level of autonomy in the day to day work,

- interpersonal skills to communicate and maintain good working relationships within the team and with internal/external partners,

- ability to author and review comprehensive and accurate procedures, protocols and reports in English,

- understanding of regulatory requirements and the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards.

- previous GMP experience is a plus
