To strengthen our UpStream Process department, based in our hub in Braine-L’Alleud, Belgium, we are looking to fill the position of: Associate Scientist.

As a UCB 'empathriven' person and Associate Scientist you like to work in an environment where you can: 
✓ Provide scientific expertise to activities relating to the early process development and late stage process optimization

✓ Be a support for upstream processes for UCB New Biologicals Entities (NBE)

✓ Be involved in various technology development projects requiring innovative research in the area of cell culture media development and bioprocess technology

✓ Generate documentation for experimental reports to support technology transfer and regulatory filings (Development and Technical Reports in English) and contribute to the preparation of regulatory submissions with business partners

As a UCB 'empathriven' person and Associate Scientist you will contribute by: 
• Designing experiments

• Supervising and performing daily laboratory activities related to upstream process development, understanding, optimization validation, transfers, support to process

• Providing expertise to troubleshoot upstream issues in the manufacturing environment,

• Analysing results

• Verifying data

• Preparing and reviewing documentation (procedures, protocols, reports as appropriate),

• Presenting / discussing results in project team meetings

• Liaise with other departments or external partners to ensure upstream knowledge transfer 
All these activities will be performed in compliance with UCB’s Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards and with the regulatory requirements for each development phase of the products. 

Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills: 
• Preferred: Master’s degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering or related discipline  

•  at least 1 year of experience working with cell culture, process development and/or cell culture media development, preferably in a similar role in the biotech industry  

• Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending > 70% of current and past work function in the laboratory

• An ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data is required

• Ability to work in a matrix and virtual team environment under deadlines

• Strong and proven laboratory skills

• High level of autonomy in the day to day work

• Interpersonal skills to communicate and maintain good working relationships within the team and with internal/external partners

• Ability to author and review comprehensive and accurate procedures, protocols and reports in English

• Understanding of regulatory requirements and the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards

• Previous GMP experience is a plus

• Fluent in English, a good level in French is an asset

• Possibility to work some week-ends
