The Upstream Process Sciences department is recruiting an Associate Scientist in the UPS team located in Braine-l’Alleud, BELGIUM. 

  

The Associate Scientist within the Upstream Process Sciences Group will be involved in activities relating to the early stage process development and late stage process optimization, transfer and clinical/commercial manufacturing support for upstream processes to produce protein therapeutics with an emphasis in cell culture or In-Process Analytics depending on candidate profile. He/She will work as part of virtual and matrix project teams across geographies and time zones. This position involves close collaboration with research, clinical and commercial manufacturing groups across the globe. 

 

The Associate Scientist will aid in cell culture production, harvest and clarification process development and optimization, process troubleshooting, investigations and characterization. He/She will coordinate and/or perform various upstream process development experiments as required, investigating culture conditions, product quality, filterability and upstream process scalability. 

 

The Associate Scientist will manage his/her own projects, diligently participate in the evaluation of products or technologies, and eventually author relevant sections of the regulatory submissions and external publications.  

 

The Associate Scientist will execute the strategic directions of the Upstream Process Sciences group. He/She will assess and implement key technology platforms ensuring continuous improvement in clinical and commercial manufacturing operations. 

 

The main activities of this function will be:  

  • Lead upstream process sciences projects in a matrix team when applicable including guiding the design of experiments, 

  • Coordinate experiment, pro-actively collect feedback from team members and manage their team when applicable, 

  • Supervise and perform daily laboratory activities related to sample purification and analysis, method development, evaluation, bridging or trouble shooting to support upstream process development activities (depending on candidate profile), 

  • Provide expertise to troubleshoot In-Process Analytics related issues in the manufacturing environment (depending on candidate profile), 

  • Apply Quality by Design (QbD) principles and Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology to design, plan and execute experiments, 

  • Supervise and perform daily laboratory activities related to upstream process development, understanding, optimization, validation, transfers and scale up, 

  • Provide expertise to troubleshoot upstream issues in the manufacturing environment, 

  • Verify data and analyze results, 

  • Prepare and review documentation (procedures, protocols, reports and potentially author relevant sections of the regulatory submissions and external publications as appropriate), 

  • Present/discuss results in project team meetings, 

  • Liaise with other departments or external partners across the globe to ensure upstream knowledge transfer. 

 

The Associate Scientist will spend > 70% of his/her time in the laboratory performing cell culture and/or analytical experiments. The Associate Scientist may occasionally perform laboratory work during the week-end if required. 

 

All these activities will be performed in compliance with UCB’s Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards and with the regulatory requirements for each development phase of the products. 

 

Profile

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Chemical Engineering or related discipline with at least 1 years of experience working with cell culture/fermentation, process development, preferably in a similar role in the biotech industry. 

  • Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending >70% of current and past work function in the laboratory. 

  • Previous GMP experience is a plus. 

  • An ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data is required.

  • High level of autonomy in the day to day work. 

  • Must demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment under deadlines.

  • Good leadership and teambuilding skills.

  • Interpersonal skills to communicate and maintain good working relationships within the team and with internal/external partners.

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards.

  • Ability to author and review comprehensive and accurate procedures, protocols and reports in English and ability to present and discuss orally scientific data in English. Good command of French is advisable.
