Project Topic: Microglia-peripheral immune cross-talk in the pathophysiology of autism and autism comorbid with epilepsy

Role Overview

This is a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship focusing on understanding the role of autoantibodies against neuronal and glial antigens and their impact on microglial modification of synaptic architecture during brain development.  The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in translating their knowledge in neuroimmunology into novel drug targets that could make a significant impact in the quality of life of autism patients and their families. This project will focus on two main aims. 1. Understand the underlying human disease biologies in autism spectrum and autism spectrum comorbid with epilepsy. 2.  Translate these basic findings into novel drug targets. The selected candidate will be trained by the neuroinflammation and other UCB teams in various cutting-edge technologies such CNS organoids, intra-vital imaging, mass spectrometry flow cytometry (CYOF), phage display etc. He/she will drive specific studies with guidance and support from the neuroinflammation team, while working closely with UCB antibody discovery and phage display teams as well as external collaborators to access additional research tools.


Technical Capabilities

  • Expertise in neuroimmunology backed by a strong publication record is required.
  • Hands-on experience with primary immune cell and more complex mixed cell assays (immune-neuronal) is required.
  • Experience handling and setting up assays with iPSC-derived immune and CNS cell systems is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in intravital imaging is highly desirable.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Neuroimmunology
  • Spoken and written English proficiency is required
