Research Scientist

Our scientists are an integral part of the epilepsy community and pursue collaborative research with a broad network of academic leaders in the field.

 

We now have an exciting opportunity in the New Medicines department at our research site in Belgium, close to Brussels (Braine l’Alleud), for a research scientist to join the epilepsy discovery group. This person will contribute to the evaluation of innovative disease-context specific treatment strategies with disease-modifying potential using in vivo  models of epilepsy and molecular techniques.

 

Job Description for position of Research Scientist

  • Implement novel in vivo chronic epilepsy animal models (in line with the epilepsy research strategy) to meet the needs of project activities.
  • Support the design and implementation of novel approaches for in vivo viral transduction studies in combination with video-EEG monitoring.
  • Run video-EEG monitoring platform and coordinate with internal collaborators for optimizations and maintenance of the platform.
  • Identify and implement improvements and optimization of the set-up
  • Independently read and interpret scientific literature, design, perform, analyze and interpret in vivo studies.
  • Interpret own results to define new experiments, studies or analyses
  • Combine and/or modify validated solutions to new problems within own work area
  • Provide independently high-quality reports in document, slide deck or poster format of analyzed data in a timely manner and report into electronic lab notebook. Ensure tractability of the data.
  • Plan, organize and prioritize own work to make the most effective use of time and resource
  • Recognize data anomalies and omissions and seek corrective action
  • Provide guidance and support related to techniques, tools and working methods to peers and less experienced team members (lab based roles)
  • Seek innovative ideas that add value to team activities
  • Devise documents according to the requirements of the ethical committee to ensure animal experimentation according to the animal welfare guidelines and provide the necessary follow-up documentation.
  • Provide ad hoc support for in vivo team
  • Present and discuss integrated data (results and findings) at internal meetings within department
  • Contribute to epilepsy strategy by supporting validation of targets
  • Contribute to the epilepsy portfolio by supporting in vivo studies for pipeline projects and present results to project teams.
     

Required profile

  • PhD degree with working knowledge in neuroscience, electrophysiological tools (EEG) in academia or pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong experience in epilepsy chronic animal models in vivo, administration routes in rodent, electrode implantation and EEG analysis
  • Experience in animal welfare and animal ethics documentation and approvals
  • Experience in neuropharmacology
  • Good skills in data analysis, graphing and reporting of data and use of required software
  • Apply problem solving skills to devise and implement improvements and optimization of the set-up
  • Updates and expands knowledge through self-directed learning and attending external meetings
  • Proactive, creative and enterprising attitude
  • Strong work ethic and motivation
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills to communicate and coordinate between team members
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • European certificate for experimenting from animals (FELASA or similar) is required
