An opportunity has arisen for us to recruit a Senior Scientist (CPRD) within our Chemical Process and Development Department.


To strengthen our Pharmaceutical Sciences Department, we are looking to fill the position of Senior Scientist (CPRD).  



About the Role


Reporting to a Team Manager within CPRD, by applying cutting-edge scientific approaches, the applicant will develop safe, innovative and cost effective chemical processes for small molecule Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). Primarily lab based, he/she will implement characterization methods (IPCs, PAT) to support process understanding and troubleshooting and will be intimately involved in the transfer of his/her processes to pilot plant and commercial manufacturing facilities


Major accountabilities


  • Developing safe, efficient, and cost effective chemical processes to support late-stage clinical trials and commercial manufacture of APIs.
  • Performing lab experiments (100 mg to multi-kg) to generate process understanding and deliverables (e.g. material, mass balance, fate of impurities…)
  • Transfer of process developed in the laboratory to pilot plant and/or commercial manufacturing facilities both at UCB and at partner organisations.
  • Troubleshooting of process/manufacturing issues, supported by labwork.
  • Literature searching to understand prior art and complete knowledge on experimental work.
  • Performing routine analyses independently (HPLC, GC, NMR…) to control processes, intermediates and final products.
  • Reporting results and conclusion (ELN, reports).
  • Reviewing technical documentation (batch records, specifications, reports from external partners).
  • Participation to the management of projects and working effectively within project teams.
  • Technical ownership and accountabilities of specific work packages (pilot plant, chemical step development, outsourced activities).


About You


  • For a PhD, ideally 2-5 years’ experience in a similar function in the pharmaceutical or fine chemical industry
  • For a Master, Minimum 3-8 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Sound knowledge of organic chemistry and retrosynthesis.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of batch processing, unit operations and process safety.
  • Practical expertise in the laboratory, running a variety of transformations.
  • Good understanding of analytical techniques (NMR, HPLC, GC, mass spectrometry).
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of chemistry searching tools (Scifinder, Reaxys).
  • Desirable skills:
  • Practical experience at multi-kg scale.
  • Process Analytical Technologies (FBRM, PVM, ReactIR, Raman).
  • Knowledge of statistical tools, DoE principles, and kinetic studies (Dynochem).
  • Biotransformations.
  • Fluent in English, knowledge of French desirable.
  • Soft skills:
  • Ability to work within a  team, across a matrix organization.
  • Open to two-way feedback.
  • Passionate about chemistry and innovation.
  • Clear communication and presentation of results.
