In order to further strengthen our Legal team within UCB’s Global Legal Affairs, UCB is actively looking for a:


Counsel – Immunology Europe


This position, based in UCB’s Slough, U.K. office, is a broad Patient Value Unit business support role primarily responsible for providing legal support to UCB’s global Immunology portfolio in Europe. The Legal Counsel will be part of the team focusing on Immunology and Dermatology (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis) and this role will provide legal support to all elements of the cross-functional teams responsible for launch and commercialization of Immunology products and services in Europe.  In addition, there will be an opportunity to contribute to transformational initiatives supporting brand agnostic projects such as Patient Experience, and contract management systems.

Role and responsibilities

General key areas of responsibility include, within scope of role, partnering and advising on a wide range of complex matters, with particular focus on core business decisions and legal issues, including without limitation:

  • Proactively counsel and provide strategic advice on the positioning/launch of new medicines and associated services including on business strategy, development programs, promotional campaigns and materials and public announcements/press releases;
  • Guiding new business models, social media initiatives and new forms of interactions with patients, healthcare professionals, payors and customers;  
  • Preparing for new product launches and supporting regulatory, pricing and reimbursement initiatives;
  • Leading the drafting and negotiation of a wide range of commercial agreements in relation to the on-going needs of relevant teams;
  • Advising on key business initiatives in Market Research, Real World Evidence and medical education/congresses
  • Partnering with business unit Data Privacy Officer to advise on GDPR issues impacting the business;
  • Working with Business Development and other functions as required to maximize life cycle management opportunities;
  • Advising on regional life cycle management strategy and initiatives;
  • Proactively interacting with senior leadership team(s);
  • Managing and working with outside counsel when and as necessary and monitoring legal spend;
  • Advising on and determining appropriate actions regarding compliance issues such as competition law, relationships with healthcare professionals and patients, promotional regulations, anti-bribery and corruption;
  • Close cooperation and interactions with other colleagues in UCB’s Global Legal Affairs department, including the Americas, EU lawyers and Ethics & Compliance teams to ensure provision of legal services in a coordinated, responsive, efficient and strategic fashion;
  • Contributing to Global Legal Affairs process improvement initiatives such as templates and presentation and/or coordination of trainings on important legal topics.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 5-12 years’ experience;
  • Strong preference for candidates with previous professional experience in the life sciences or consumer healthcare sector including good industry knowledge and familiarity with EU life sciences/consumer health law and regulation;
  • Digital health experience is a plus
  • GDPR experience required;
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and handle multiple, often complex projects simultaneously.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate;
  • Eager to stay informed of (new) legal developments, particularly in areas which are relevant for UCB’s activities (e.g., attending training/seminar(s) on a regular basis);
  • Strong identification with UCB’s Patient Value Strategy, ethical and cultural values;
  • Fluent in English, second European language preferred but not essential;
  • High level of integrity. Does the right thing even when no one is looking.
