Role Overview

The Head of Tissue Remodelling Research role is a senior leadership role in the Immuno-Bone Therapeutic Area in New Medicines, Slough, UK. The mission of the IBTA is to discover and develop first-in-class and/or best-in-disease therapeutics that address key unmet needs of specific patients suffering from inflammatory and musculoskeletal diseases, based on novel understanding of the pathobiology of these conditions.  

Within the IBTA, the Head of Tissue Remodeling Research will be responsible for the overall strategy as well as the initiation and execution of all projects related to Tissue Remodeling, with special focus on bone and musculoskeletal conditions on the one hand and fibrosis on the other hand. She/he will also be responsible for seamless collaboration with a) the Immunology Research in the IBTA, b) the different functions in the IBTA (Disease Biology Support, Discovery Research, and Translational Research), c) the other departments in New Medicines (in particular Discovery Sciences, Development Sciences, and Translational Medicine), and d) the clinical development and late stage parts of the organization. She/he will be member of the IBTA Leadership Team and as such have an active and significant contribution to - and accountability for - the overall IBTA, New Medicines, and corporate objectives.  

As a global leader, she/he should also contribute to evolve and implement the UCB Patient Value Strategy, to champion its principles, and to role-model its values and behaviours. 

The position is Slough-UK based and reports to the Head of the Immuno-Bone Therapeutic Area. 


Main Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement an innovative and coherent research and discovery strategy for bone/musculoskeletal and fibrotic diseases
  • Initiate, lead, and coordinate research projects in this field, delivering at least two new targets and one new candidate per year
  • Manage resources and budget for his/her part of the organization
  • Mentor, coach, and develop talent in his/her part of the organization
  • Connect the Tissue Remodeling Research to the other parts of the IBTA and New Medicines
  • Set up external collaborations to access cutting edge science and accelerate translational research in the connective tissue field
  • Function as the primary contact person and bridge to the late stage organization, in particular the bone PVU, for tissue remodeling
  • Actively participate to all IBTA Leadership team activities and accountabilities
  • Actively contribute to New Medicines strategic and governance activities (portfolio reviews, scientific advisory boards, …)
  • Champion UCBs Patient Value Strategy


    Essential Requirements

  • Phd (or equivalent), a medical degree would also be desireable. 
  • Proven track record of original research in connective tissue pathobiology with international impact
  • Considerable experience in industry or academia in the field of connective tissue research/medicine, with demonstrable expereince in a leadership position.
  • Medical background/disease understanding is a plus
  • Knowledge and expertise in human translational research and/or early clinical development
  • International experience in different organizations
  • Proven leadership skills in terms of vision/strategy, innovation, management, and coaching/mentoring
  • Disciplined team-player, driving healthy scientific debate but willing to ‘disagree and commit’
  • Results-driven
  • Mindset of a connector
  • Independent mind, able and willing to take decisions in equivocal situations
  • Willingness to grow and develop in an open-feedback environment
