Role overview

The Protein Biophysics / Mass Spectrometry Group at UCB provides project support across a wide range of new biological entities (NBE) from early stage target validation through to pre-clinical evaluation.  Characterisation of biological molecules by mass spectrometry generated from our discovery platforms is essential for timely progression of these projects into the clinic.  As part of the mass spectrometry team you will be a graduate scientist keen to gain expertise in the LC-MS analysis of intact antibodies and proteins generated for our diverse project pipeline.


Primary responsibilities

  • Learn and take responsibility for routine LC-MS data acquisition of protein and antibody formats
  • Become independent in the interpretation of MS data against protein sequence and observed post-translational modifications (PTMs)
  • Efficiently generate, report and disseminate data to projects groups
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance of LC-MS systems within the group
  • Contribute to workflow development by learning automated data processing packages
  • With time and training, manage and lead routine mass spectrometry across different parts of the organisation


Essential requirements

  • A graduate scientist (BSc. / MSc.) in biology, chemistry or biochemistry with an interest in learning mass spectrometry techniques
  • Previous industrial experience (up to 3 years) helpful but not essential
  • Chromatographic experience (HPLC, UPLC, LC-MS) is an advantage
  • Willingness to learn the practical aspects of equipment maintenance and operation
  • Be able to learn new laboratory skills quickly and demonstrate ability to follow protocols
  • Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication and a collaborative approach suited to a team working environment
