Everything we do starts with a simple question: “How will this make a difference to the lives of people living with severe diseases?” And to find the answers, we connect globally with patients and their families living with the physical and social burdens of severe disease. These connections give us new perspectives, drive our innovation, and offer a hope for a new generation of therapies that will help to transform lives.

To strengthen our Antibody Biology Group, we are looking to fill the position of: Research Scientist – Cell culture.

Role overview

We are currently seeking a skilled cell culture / expression scientist with experience in the generation of stable mammalian cell lines for the expression of proteins. The successful candidate will be employed in the Cell Line Development sub-team which is part of the Antibody Biology Group. Within the Antibody Biology Group, this team focuses on the generation of stable mammalian cell lines and the development of manufacturing processes.

Primary responsibilities

  • Lab based scientist taking a role in the planning, design and delivery of stable mammalian cell lines for the expression of proteins.
  • Supporting the optimisation of cell culture processes and help implement novel technologies.
  • Analysing and understanding data to inform on selection of best stable cell line clones for manufacture.
  • Communicating both within the Cell Line Development Team and across multiple disciplines (Project Teams, Antibody Discovery and Clinical Production Teams) ensuring that information on work progress is relayed in a clear manner.
  • Understanding the protein needs of early stage projects and therapeutic area scientists along with coordination of delivery with project teams.

Essential requirements

  • Ideally a PhD with at least 1 year in industry or be an experienced graduate with 3 to 5 years’ experience in an industrial setting (or equivalent).
  • Awareness of the regulatory requirements to produce therapeutic antibodies and therapeutic non-antibody proteins.
  • Familiarity with lab and manufacturing scale mammalian cell expression systems with a good working understanding of cell culture laboratory equipment including vicells, FACS, Octet, AMBR systems and ideally laboratory automation.
  • Demonstrable understanding of molecular biology, protein purification data and analytics including plasmid production / DNA sequencing, expression, affinity chromatography, ion exchange, SEC, ELISA, SDS PAGE.
  • General knowledge of lab software systems including Office, eLabBooks, along with searching for literature and patents.
