Research Scientist/Senior Scientist - Mass Spectrometry/Biophysics

Role Overview

The Protein Structure and Biophysics department, within the R&D sector of UCB, comprises 4 sub-groups: Protein Production, Protein Structure, Protein Biophysics and Physical and Analytical Sciences Group (PASG). The Protein Biophysics Group provides support for projects from early stage target validation through to those undergoing pre-clinical evaluation. This involves screening and selection of robust therapeutic antibody molecules using different biophysical methods generated from our different discovery platforms, plus contribution to mechanistic and structural understanding of new protein targets.


As part of the Biophysics Group, you will be a high calibre, laboratory-based candidate, with expertise in mass spectrometry, who can quickly integrate into this highly motivated and focussed team.  You will have a key role in the characterisation of protein molecules across a wide range of our NBE and NCE projects significantly contributing to timely progression of these projects into the clinic and beyond.


This role will be based in Slough, UK.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Analyse intact, folded antibody/protein molecules across a number of research projects on a routine basis to inform on product integrity.  Antibody knowledge would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrate in depth knowledge of software packages (for example, MassLynx) and their application to large molecule (small molecule) data acquisition and processing across a broad range of Waters LC/MS systems.
  • Identify and flag susceptible post-translational modifications (PTMs) to inform and mitigate risk for product stability.
  • Have experience with native MS to explore PPI and small molecule-protein interactions.
  • Have expertise in chromatography method development for large molecule (and small molecule) LC/MS analysis.
  • Demonstrate maintenance and troubleshooting of a broad spectrum of LC/MS systems operating in standalone and open access environments, for example, Waters Acquity LC systems with QDA, Xevo Q-ToF, G2-HDMS
  • Contribute to the development of novel mass spectrometry technology in the Biophysics team.
  • Share knowledge and experience across UCB’s mass spectrometry community.
  •  Act as an ambassador for UCB by proactively communicating science externally via oral communications at scientific meetings and through publications in peer reviewed scientific journals.


Essential Requirements

  • A new PhD or post graduate with 2-4 years’ experience of ‘hands-on’ mass spectrometry characterisation of antibody/protein molecules using a range of different equipment, preferably within an industrial or highly regarded academic laboratory in a Biophysics/ Biochemistry environment.
  • Proven track record of publications related to mass spectrometry applications in peer reviewed, high quality science journals.
  • Highly motivated individual with excellent attention to detail and critical data analysis skills.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with proven ability to deliver to tight timelines.
  • Flexibility in learning new techniques including biophysical / biochemical analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication and team-working ability.
