Help us transform patients' lives.

At UCB, we put our heart, soul, and skills into making a difference for people living with severe disease. Working together to push the boundaries, we blend the best of our talents to unlock innovation.  Will you join us in our pioneering adventure?

Role overview

The SPR and Biophysical Assays team in Slough is looking to recruit a highly motivated Research Scientist with experience in SPR (surface plasmon resonance). Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience of drug discovery in the biopharmaceutical industry or in an academic environment.

As an SPR and Biophysical Assays scientist, you will be responsible for the development and execution of assays to identify therapeutic molecules, and to characterise their target-binding properties. Although the role will support both antibody and small molecule projects the principal responsibility will be to perform small molecule SPR screening and characterisation assays, under the guidance of an experienced SPR scientist.  The candidate will have an understanding of how binding kinetics supports the drug discovery process and, ultimately, to the effective identification of transformational drugs to treat human disease and bring benefit to patients.

The candidate must have a proven track record of delivering high quality experimental data, expertise in conducting SPR assays and ideally prior experience of applying SPR to small molecules, though training will be provided.  Experience of automated liquid handling and tools for data capture would also be desirable.  In addition, the candidate must be able to demonstrate individual contributions to projects and to possess strong interpersonal skills.

The scientist will be expected to represent the SPR and Biophysical Assays team at project meetings and provide insights for projects based on their understanding of the binding mechanism and kinetics.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Development and execution of high quality SPR assays principally for small molecule therapeutics.
  • Proactive communication and partnership with other groups within and outside own functional area to gain credibility and impact in science, technology and project progression.
  • Keep abreast of and implement technology developments within the area of biophysical techniques for understanding the molecular interactions and kinetics of potential therapeutics.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of BSc (or equivalent)
  • Significant experience in applying Surface Plasmon Resonance to biological interactions
  • Capable of presenting complex experimental data to diverse teams

We can offer you the opportunity to join a leading biopharmaeutical company.  In return, UCB is offering a competitve salary and benefits package, with continuous professional and personal development
