The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a professional who serves as a key field-based scientific resource for healthcare providers, patients, and internal UCB colleagues within the region.  Information shared is timely, accurate, and fair-balanced.  The MSL provides scientific support for preclinical and clinical research within the region.

 

Scientific Knowledge and Exchange

  • Possesses superior knowledge of therapeutic area, including related disease states and comorbid medical conditions in immunology including both rheumatology and dermatology
  • Possesses superior knowledge of UCB products, competitive products, and other therapeutic options within relevant disease states
  • Reviews and critiques scientific publications
  • Collects, analyzes, and communicates fair-balanced information concerning therapeutic area, treatment options, emerging standards of care, and competitive intelligence
  • Possesses a robust understanding of competitive intelligence and its strategic impact upon UCB within rheumatology and dermatology
  • Addresses medical information inquiries   
  • Provides effective clinical presentations to internal and external audiences and tailors presentations to meet specific audience needs  
  • Plans and conducts local continuing education programs to satisfy the specific needs of individual KOLs and Institutions within the region
  • Serves as a scientific expert at key medical and scientific conferences, advisory boards, clinical investigator meetings, internal meetings, and patient advocacy group meetings. Assesses the need for, planning and execution of medical advisory boards in the specified therapeutic area.
  • Plans, facilitates and executes regional medical advisory boards and supports commercial advisory boards in the specific therapeutic areas as needed.

 

KOL Development

  • Identifies local regional Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs)
  • Maintains and broadens synergistic relationships with regional KOLs to expand research, advisory, and educational partnership opportunities
  • Assures thoughtful exchange of current medical information related to UCB products and therapeutic areas of clinical development with KOLs 

 

Territory Management

  • Very strong business acumen with a solid understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare arena
  • Understands the impact of UCB strategies upon day to day activities in the region
  • Generates appropriate medical tactical plans to maximize collaborative opportunities and to provide superior service to KOLs and institutions in the region
  • On a regular basis proactively communicates and coordinates activities and scientific opportunities with other UCB field based and internal colleagues
  • Evaluates each KOL individually to assure appropriate level of support
  • Proactively provides information to medical leadership and internal colleagues about regional issues that impact business or healthcare practice (standard of care)
  • Seeks novel and innovative opportunities within territory

 

Research

  • Assesses feasibility, facilitates submission, and serves as the primary liaison between UCB and investigator, for unsolicited Investigator-Initiated Studies (IISs) from inception to publication
  • Assists in the identification of potential sites for UCB-sponsored clinical research programs and serves as a field-based scientist to support clinical trial programs as needed
  • Anticipates obstacles and challenges in study management and proactively works to avoid them
  • Serves as scientific expert at investigator meetings as needed e. Identifies and communicates research gaps within therapeutic area and supports Phase II-IV sites as required

 

Commercialization Support in the Region

  • Develops and strengthens relationships with internal colleagues to maximize field efforts
  • Understands roles and needs of various functional groups and seeks mutually beneficial outcomes:
  • Sales 1. Participates in scientific and medical training of Sales colleagues 2. Responds to complex scientific inquiries from the field 3. Trains and updates physicians 
  • Marketing 1. Provides scientific and medical support for internal and external meetings and projects as needed iii. Market Access 1. Provides relevant clinical presentations to key decisions makers as appropriate 2. Participates in scientific and medical training of Market Access colleagues
  • Medical Information 1. Provides field updates regarding topics of interest for creation and/or updating of Standard Response Letters

 

Experience

Minimum of 2 years MSL industry–related experience is required with 5 years of MSL experience strongly preferred

Relevant therapeutic and clinical experience as well as KOL interaction in rheumatology and dermatology is preferred Specific skills (Include specific skills and knowledge necessary to meet the objectives of the position)

1. Strong business acumen with a solid understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare area

2. Strong interpersonal skills and diplomatic skills that will allow relationships with both diverse internal and external medical and scientific experts, as well as brand team members

3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills

4. Ability to clearly articulate complex scientific concepts in 1:1 and group settings

5. Ability to actively listen and process information to identify opportunities

6. Ability to take initiative and work both independently and in a team environment

7. Strong multi-tasking, time & project management, and organizational skills 8. Ability to effectively balance field time and administrative duties 9. Proficient in Microsoft applications, and web-based applications

 

Education:

Master’s Degree (Required)

Ph.D.  (Preferred)
