About Real-World Evidence (RWE)

The world of drug development is changing; the evolving external environment increases our need to deliver differentiated solutions to specific patient populations, enhance access to those solutions and better demonstrate their value to society.

To achieve this vision, we aim to maximize the value provided by “Real-World Data” (RWD) from the health care system. Thus, we and our external stakeholders will gain a deeper understanding of unmet needs in those patient populations and the realities of current clinical practice.

Your role summary

The RWE Lead Scientist works in partnership with the RWE Strategy Lead to anticipate, identify and address the RWE needs of internal and external stakeholders to ensure successful development and commercialization of UCB assets across a particular therapeutic area.

As the RWE Lead Scientist, you will be responsible for day-to-day project leadership, working with internal stakeholders and our internal RWE Scientists, external RWE Contract Scientists and third parties to design and execute global RWE projects using real-world data (RWD) in order to:

  • contribute to our understanding of the diseases, treatments and patient outcomes
  • drive strategic internal decision-making towards the development of clinically differentiated solutions that address unmet medical needs
  • support external decision-making by key stakeholder groups such as regulators, policy makers, payers, and prescribers
  • guide clinical development decisions with regards to the selection of appropriate clinical/patient-relevant endpoints, treatment comparators, target patients’ segments.
  • support key components of UCB’s Patient Value Strategy through the exploration of new perspectives that can augment ‘traditional’ clinical data, thereby reducing the time to patient access of new medicines.

Your responsibilities

Furthermore, as a Lead RWE Scientist you will contribute by:

  • co-creating Global RWE Strategy, tactical & communication plans with the RWE Strategy Lead for your dedicated therapeutic area
  • representing the global RWE team on relevant UCB asset team meetings; acting as first point of contact for asset related enquiries
  • leading RWE study execution, including study design and analysis specification and protocol development
  • liaising with RWE methodologists and RWD specialists regarding study design and choice of data sources
  • (as required) managing a dedicated group of RWE contract scientists, and overseeing their execution of systematic and pragmatic literature reviews, analytical projects, and report creation
  • providing RWE analysts with clarifications concerning protocol implementation
  • driving interpretation of analysis in collaboration with RWE Strategy Lead & other relevant internal stakeholders, managing internal & external communication including scientific publications
  • maintaining an external network of collaborators to support the realization of the overall RWE strategic plan

Your background and competencies

You hold a Masters degree in Epidemiology, Outcomes Research or other relevant scientific discipline, and have a track record of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals. You have built at least 5 years of experience in successfully delivering global and/or local RWE projects from conceptualization to publication within the pharmaceutical industry, or with a recognized expert consultancy or academic center of excellence. The ideal candidate would have experience of market launch.

You are a proven content expert with a record of delivery. You possess a good background knowledge of industry trends and best practices, specifically related to Epidemiology and Outcomes Research. You have a good knowledge and understanding of a broad range of study designs and use-cases for RWD, plus applicable regulations in pharmacovigilance and clinical development. Your ability to solve scientific and technical questions and your expertise in the EU 5 / US healthcare environment allows you to leverage changes in healthcare systems to help plan and drive development of innovative patient access solutions.

Your oral/written English is excellent and you can interpret technical information for less expert audiences. You have proven ability to write/edit scientific communications (abstracts, poster presentations, podium presentations, manuscripts, etc.) and deliver presentations to senior industry or external stakeholder audiences in a relaxed and proficient presentation style. Your way of working is open-minded and collaborative, building strong relationships with cross-functional teams. You proactively reach out to external/internal stakeholders to synthesize thinking, build advocacy and empower implementation of the solutions in support of UCB portfolio performance and patient outcomes.

Most importantly, you have a genuine interest in supporting UCB patient populations, and exhibit impeccable ethics and standards.
