Job Summary 

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) is an exciting new small-molecule modality that will expand the target portfolio and a key investment for UCB. As a data scientist in our team you will be instrumental in conducting computational analysis on complex data types from both internal and external sources. Your insights will help guide experimental design across a range of advance technological platforms (e.g. RNA-Seq, proteomics, single-cell profiling, DELs, imaging) that would be deployed to help identify and develop novel small molecule degraders.

The position requires combining an understanding of biological sciences with computational techniques in data engineering, statistics and mathematics to contribute to the discovery and development of novel therapies. You will work closely with our scientists across multiple departments and multiple research sites, and actively collaborate with external academic and industrial partners.

 

Primary responsibilities

  • Prepare, process and interpret data from omics and other high dimensional modalities.
  • Develop approaches to utilize state of the art tools and technologies, or develop new methods where appropriate, to enable the above.
  • Drive scientific excellence and technology evaluations to maximize impact on the program and projects.
  • Provide strong scientific thinking, develop hypotheses and drive scientific learnings on projects.
  • Ensure impactful project contributions through effective internal and external collaboration.

 

Minimal requirements:

  • The successful candidate will have a strong scientific and computational background, such as a PhD in bio/cheminformatics, computational biology/chemistry, or related discipline with at least 3 years of work experience in a life-science environment.
  • Familiar with fundamental concepts in molecular biology, chemical biology, statistics, data mining, and bioinformatics. Experience using machine learning, Bayesian network, or deep neuronal network to solve project-specific problems a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and apply project-tailored and generic data analysis workflows to answer scientific questions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with orthogonal data and metadata (e.g. transcriptomics data, proteomics data, imaging data). Proficiency in proteomics and/or image analysis is a plus.
  • Excellent scientific communication skills and effective data visualization skills.
  • Excellent written and oral English; any additional language a plus.
  • Proficient in Python or R, SQL, and shell scripting in a Unix/Linux environment.

 

Desirable skills:

  • Experience with cloud-based and/or cluster computing environments (Spark/UGE/AWS).
  • Designing and using relational databases to answer scientific questions at scale.
  • Familiar with web-based deployment of models and results (rest, flask, js, plotly, or shiny).
  • Relevant wet lab experience is a bonus.
