Job nature and scope

Reporting to the Head of Translational Medicine Neuroscience, this position is supporting actively the clinical strategy of the Neurology portfolio from early translation including first-in-man studies, the design and execution of proof of concept studies and translational medicine and biomarker strategy for the Neurology Early Development pipeline.

The applicant is expected to be a clinical expert in neurology with a strong track record of delivery in industry and/or has strong experience in (preferably early) clinical development in the pharmaceutical industry, with track record of delivery. He or she will work closely with colleagues in the Neurology Therapeutic Area, Translational Medicine and the Neurology Patient Value Unit to deliver a portfolio in line with the UCB Patient Value strategy. He will provide leadership in Clinical programs, lead through influence across the cross- functional matrix and establish him-/herself as a respected clinical and drug development expert within UCB.

The business purpose of this position is to provide translational strategy for preclinical assets and clinical/medical leadership of Early Solutions Neurology programs, including devising and delivering innovative, feasible and efficient clinical plans to proof of concept (PoC).

The role holder will work with the Head Translational Medicine Neuroscience to generate a portfolio of Translational Medicine projects to support the pipeline with a focus on generating patient stratification hypotheses and identifying biomarkers for target engagement and patient selection. These studies will generally be delivered through a network of academic translational medicine sites and will be executed with the support of TM functions.

 

Major accountabilities 

 

This role spans Neurology programs from Discovery Research target identification through to clinical proof of concept (PoC) and the transition point to late phase development.

  • Provide clinical leadership at all stages of Neurology project progression from target selection through to PoC. Following preclinical projects from target selection to candidate selection and through early clinical development this may be via the role of Clinical Subteam Lead (CSTL), or therapeutic area expert.
  • Work in partnership with other key lines (eg Research, Biomarkers, Early Evidence Strategy, Development Sciences, GCSO, Regulatory) to ensure all clinical aspects of the development plan are of high quality. This includes devising a feasible, efficient and innovative clinical plan, with clear decision points/criteria to inform project progression and enable seamless transition post-PoC to late phase development.
  • Provide input to overall TM Neuroscience strategy, including alignment with TAs, other PVUs and Practices.
  • Provide TM clinical input to project or therapeutic area-related scientific advisory boards.
  • Provide TM clinical input to licensing opportunities.
  • Represent TM at internal strategic and, dependent on seniority, governance bodies (DPM, ADB, PSB).
  • Establish and leverage KOL network to establish high value research collaborations and inform TM Immuno-bone / Neurology and TA strategy.
  • May have line management responsibilities
  • May be involved/ and take a lead in strategic efforts in a sub-area (e.g. neuroinflammation)
  • May be involved/ and take a lead in development of new/advanced therapeutic modalities (e.g. gene therapy)
  • Act as medical study lead for clinical studies (phase I-IIa, as well as relevant Translational Medicine studies), potentially with medical input delivered via other medically qualified colleagues in TM. This will include design and protocol authoring, input to study operational set-up procedures and regulatory interactions, results interpretation and presentation.
  • Ensure clinical feasibility of study protocols.

 

Education, Experience and Skills: 

  • Should be a strong candidate for one or all of the key features
    • Experience in clinical development of advance therapeutics (e.g. gene therapy)
    • Neurologist/Psychiatrist (or experienced Neuroscientist) with early development experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Board certification or similar clinical experience in Neurology/ Psychiatry or an equivalent neuroscience training.
    • Has experience in (preferably early) clinical development in the pharmaceutical industry, with track record of delivery
  • Track record in translational medicine and exploratory trials, with a focus on moving concepts/compounds from discovery research to PoC.
  • Experience in implementation or different biomarker modalities in early clinical development. -  the key ones, must haves
  • Extensive Global Network in Neurology and global drug development experience
  • MD with experience in Neurology early development and translational medicine
  • Strong communication skills with good presentation skills
  • High performer, strong team-commitment, innovative and can manage uncertainty
  • Ability to work independently and to solve complex problems and multiple projects in supervisory capacity
  • Listening, coaching, mentoring, facilitation, influencing and negotiation skills
  • A participative management style with the ability to build effective team relationships with colleagues at all levels in the organization
