UCB is a leading global biopharmaceutical company developing innovative therapies to address unmet needs of patients suffering from severe disorders. The company’s international R&D organization is New Medicines responsible from early research up to clinical Proof of Concept and focused on two main Therapeutic Areas,  Immunology and Neurology. Immunology is based in Slough UK, while Neurology is based in Braine-l’Alleud, Belgium, close to the company Headquarters located in Brussels. Communications Lead, NewMedicines

Job Nature and Scope


Lead and manage all internal communications for PVU NewMedecines in support of UCB’s mission and strategic business objectives. The position reports to the Head of Operations, NewMedecines with close interaction with the Head of PVU NewMedecines, NewMeds Leadership team and other key internal stakeholders including Global communications team and Braine Site and BII Slough interactions.


As Communications Lead, NewMeds the aim of the role is to ensure full effectiveness in:

  • Developing and leading two-way internal communications on Braine and Slough campuses and developing a stronger UCB culture among all NewMeds employees.
  • Increasing transparency of key projects and initiatives within NewMeds and outside NewMeds
  • Ensuring governance reporting in a timely and co-ordinated manner with the Portfolio Strategy team.
  • Raising the profile of NewMedecines across UCB 
  • Driving clear outcomes from NMLT meetings and communicating key messages across NewMeds organisation
  • Coordinating Portfolio Review SAB meetings and advisory boards
  • Ensuring Voices actions are taken and communicated across NewMeds


Additionally, the role will see you take overall responsibility for some global /cross-functional projects as part of the Global Communication team.


Major Accountabilities:


  • Develop & lead on NewMeds internal communications strategy
  • Own and develop internal communication plans for the Braine Slough Campuses including the Intranet and Internet
  • Manage internal communications within NewMeds, to include company announcements and other relevant news items to support an open communications culture
  • Works closely with Global Corporate Communications to ensure connectivity and alignment with company wide communications
  • Support CEO, Executive Committee and senior leaders when meeting with NewMeds teams in Braine/ Slough and when speaking at internal events such as the NewMeds conference, site briefings/ Townhalls
  • Coordinate visits from external parties in Braine/Slough Campuses
  • Ensure that all communications efforts are compliant with the appropriate Belgian and UK Regulations  
  • Ensure all required governance reporting needs are met in a timely and co-ordinated manner
  • Support onboarding of new recruits in collaboration with Talent and Business leaders



Education, Experience and skills:


  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Fluent in French and English
  • Further qualification in communication related discipline would be an advantage
  • Extensive experience in internal communications, encompassing a wide spectrum of topics including R&D lifecycle, discovery milestones, change management, staff engagement programmes, conference/meeting planning, advisory boards, training materials and internet/intranet strategy development
  • Significant communications experience in the bio pharmaceutical Industry.
  • Familiar with scientific materials and how to use them to best promote the company’s messages
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral, with ability to target communications to specific audiences and topics.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with senior level leaders, local employees, global communications team, external parties
  • Ability to effectively set direction and resolve problems in own area
  • Credibility with senior business leaders, external parties
  • Ability to interpret internal & external challenges and recommend best practice solutions to overcome challenges.
