To strengthen our Biotech Sciences department, based in our hub in Braine l’Alleud, Belgium, we are looking to fill the position of: Scientist Upstream Process Science.

As a UCB 'empathriven' person and Scientist Upstream Process Science you like to work in an environment where you can:

• Be involved in activities relating to the early stage process development and late stage process optimization, transfer and clinical/commercial manufacturing support for upstream processes to produce protein therapeutics with an emphasis on harvest and clarification step.

• Work in close collaboration with research, clinical and commercial manufacturing groups across the globe. You will work as part of virtual and matrix project teams across geographies and time zones. You will represent the Upstream Process Sciences group as appropriate in cross-functional project teams such as technical satellite teams responsible for the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls of specific recombinant proteins.

• Aid in harvest and clarification process development and optimization, process troubleshooting, investigations and characterization. You will coordinate and/or perform various upstream process development experiments as required, investigating culture conditions, product quality, filterability and upstream process scalability.

• Manage your own projects, diligently participate in the evaluation of products or technologies, and eventually author relevant sections of the regulatory submissions and external publications.  

• Execute the strategic directions of the Upstream Process Sciences group. 


As a UCB 'empathriven' person and Scientist Upstream Process Science you will contribute by: 
• Leading upstream process sciences projects in a matrix team, including guiding the design of experiments

• Coordinating experiment, pro-actively collecting feedback from team members and manage a team when applicable

• Applying Quality by Design (QbD) principles and Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology to design, plan and execute experiments

• Supervising and performing daily laboratory activities related to upstream process development, understanding, optimization, validation, transfers and scale up

• Providing expertise to troubleshoot upstream issues in the manufacturing environment

• Verifying data and analyzing results 
• Preparing and reviewing documentation (procedures, protocols, reports and potentially author relevant sections of the regulatory submissions and external publications as appropriate)

• Presenting / discussing results in project team meetings 
 
Interested? For this position you’ll need the following education, experience and skills: 
• Master’s degree or above, PhD degree preferred in Biology, Chemical Engineering or related discipline  

• 3-5 years of experience working with cell culture/fermentation, process development, preferably in a similar role in the biotech industry  

• Strong laboratory skills and a track record of spending >50% of current and past work function in the laboratory

• Proven experience leading projects in a matrix and virtual team and in a customer-oriented environment under deadlines

• An ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data is required

• High level of autonomy in the day to day work

• Must demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment under deadlines 
• Good leadership and teambuilding skills

• Ability to multi-task, to organize and communicate large amounts of data

• Interpersonal skills to communicate and maintain good working relationships within the team and with internal/external partners

• Understanding of regulatory requirements and the importance of Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as well as Quality policies and standards

• Ability to author and review comprehensive and accurate procedures, protocols and reports in English

• Good command of French is advisable

• Previous GMP experience is a plus
