Nature & Scope


The Area Medical Head – Northern Europe (NE)  provides a leadership role within UCB NE Area, as a member of the NE Leadership Team and of the PVOps GeoMed Europe Leadership Team through contribution to key organizational priorities and taking ownership for implementation of leadership teams initiatives.


The Area Medical Head NE  leads the oversight and implementation of a comprehensive Medical framework from strategy determination to its practical implementation in NE, both of which are delivered in close partnership with internal stakeholders across PVx. The Area Medical Head NE contribute to delivering of value for patients with three priorities:  


1/ Medical Affairs Talent in NE

  • Ensure the capabilities of the NE Medical Community is ready for now and the future
  • Actively involved in the development and evolution of the NE Medical Affairs competencies, linked to the PVOps GeoMed Europe and the PVP Medical Affairs Practice
  • Facilitating consistent competencies and capabilities across NE Medical Community for people development, role transitions and TOR
  • Visibility to the strategic plans, as appropriate, in order to enable its implementation and execution

2/ Medical Governance and Scientific Integrity in NE 

  • Bring Senior, Credentialed Medical Leadership on the “How”, i.e. championing the Medical Affairs foundational activities and being a credible partner on the “what” with the patient population (disease) and scientific expertise on the asset(s).
  • Specific activities in scope include, but are not limited to, UCBCares, medical information, patient experience and engagement, clinical continuum, promotional and scientific clearance, external funding, transparency of transfers of value for HCPs / HCOs / Patients Organizations, affiliate Risk2Value.
  • Ensure connected frameworks and processes in NE between medical, clinical, regulatory, RWE and safety
  • Provide NE specific user input into end-to-end corporate medical affairs processes in order to achieve clarity, efficiency, enabling adherence to these processes

3/ Medical / Scientific Engagement and Advocacy in NE

  • Bring senior, credentialed non-asset or PVU specific medical leadership in partnership with the PVUs.
  • UCBCares, patient support and medical information science.
  • Act as NE Senior Medical Corporate spokesperson on cross-portfolio topics, including pipeline and new regional assets in partnership with the deep scientific expertise of the PVUS for PVU specific topic.
  • CMO of NE, declared to authorities where applicable
  • Connect with License partners, payors, industry associations medical forums and patient associations in collaboration with the NE External Engagement Lead


Major accountabilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Uphold UCB as a trustful partner for external stakeholders in NE area through scientific integrity and high operating standards. Ensure that fair balance is maintained to sustain credibility and trust.
  • Act as NE Senior Medical Corporate spokesperson on cross-portfolio topics, including pipeline and new regional assets in partnership with the deep scientific expertise of the PVUS for PVU specific topic. CMO of NE, declared to authorities where applicable.
  • Grow Medical Affairs Talent focused on shared and functional competencies.
  • Lead the performance of medical governance components, their measurement, management, training and process adaptations to achieve the highest standards in NE region.
  • Development, operationalization and implementation (in partnership with PVx) of standard frameworks and targeted solutions for all activities in scope, while establishing boundaries that allow diversification of activities within allowable frameworks in NE area. Targeted solution development to be based upon a deep and shared understanding of the therapeutic, geographic, and governance requirements and drivers of value within UCB’s and its partners’ footprints.
  • Ensure PVOps NE Medical team evolve towards an integrated approach for business impact via partnering with NE PVUs for value creation; building on PVOps GeoMed European team’s ability to implement processes while integrating business, science, and medicine. In addition, ensure clarity of the respective remits of roles, as well as the segregation of duties.
  • Oversee the strategic evolution, implementation and operations of UCBCares in NE to deliver best individual experience for patients and external stakeholders.
  • Is the NE Risk2Value Area lead; establishes a robust risk culture within UCB’s NE management and related countries that incorporates the objectives of the local operations in alignment with the vision of R2V.
  • Works closely with colleagues in NE to develop a shared accountability for each other’s successes through a deep understanding of shared objectives, behaviours and deliverables.
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, supervision and over-sight for PVOps NE Medical team and activities. To effectively drive talent and professional development, manage allocated budget and standard operating procedures.


Job profile

  • Doctorate degree (MD, PharmD, DVM or PhD in life science related field) required
  • Substantial Medical Affairs experience in more than one specific area.
  • Is knowledgeable of the NE environment and NE healthcare ecosystems
  • Demonstrable experience of governance activities and their pragmatic implementation in an integrity framework
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Demonstrable evidence of successful implementation of innovative externally relevant solutions
  • Experience of working within and leading teams and matrix teams with evidence of success in co-creating and implementing innovative governance programs and externally focused solutions
  • Comfortable working with complexity in a fluid environment
  • Experience in KPI and metric development, deployment and oversight
  • Flexible and inspirational leadership that values and demonstrates partnership and humility, with an ability to articulate a clear vision that links all aspects of medical affairs work, integrity activities and that of its partners
