Role overview

We have an exciting new opportunity for a (senior) highly motivated drug discovery leader to oversee and set strategic direction for two scientific teams focused on protein and cell-based assays.  The team reports through the New Modalities group within Discovery Sciences working very closely with in vitro pharmacology groups based in the Therapeutic Area (TA) departments.


The role will be based in Slough, UK.


Primary responsibilities

Leading the Target Based Drug Screening (TBDS) Group, you will be a leader of two independent teams: one team focused on protein-biochemical and the other cell-based screening methods.  With a particular focus on quantitative molecular pharmacology and another with a strong focus and world leading resources in surface plasmon resonance and other biophysics based screening methods.  The TBDS teams support target-based validation, screening and mode of action studies for small molecule (NCE) and biologic (NBE) projects throughout the company and across therapeutic areas. 


The successful candidate will be intimately involved in early stage / pre-clinical projects which can operate across multiple sites including UK, Belgium and US and across all of our current clinical areas of focus: inflammation immunology and neurology. Hence this role will be a natural hub for and representative of these closely linked work streams.  


Skills knowledge and experience

You should have intimate experience of devising, implementing and understanding biochemical/biophysical screens and have proven experience and knowledge to troubleshoot experiments, oversee data analysis and its communication and mode of action studies enabling the meaningful discovery of both small and large molecule drugs.  You will represent these teams and functions at site level and facilitate the connectivity of the teams to new work streams and cross functional projects. 


  • PhD (or equivalent) proven leadership track record in drug discovery and leading leaders and developing teams
  • Small and large molecule drug discovery experience from inception to clinical candidate
  • Significant experience in industrial research with demonstrable experience in drug discovery
  • Ability to react to, adopt and implement new ideas and technology is essential 
  • Understanding cutting edge technical and scientific methods spot opportunities to innovate
  • Foster a creative and cooperative team environment and communicate across teams and disciplines throughout the company at senior levels
  • Ability to foster an accountable, open and accountable culture resulting in pro-active, adaptive and resilient team members.
  • Excellent communication skills with experience of leading cross-functional projects successfully.
