Date: Jun 29, 2019

Location: Slough, Berkshire, GB

At UCB everything we do starts with a simple question: “How will this make a difference to the lives of people living with severe diseases?” We do that by connecting with patients and their families around the world living with the physical and social burdens of severe disease of the immune system and the central nervous system. Those connections offer new perspectives, drive innovation, and offer the hope of a new generation of therapies that will help to transform lives.

Role Overview

You will be based at our UK site in Slough and work as part of the Immuno-Bone Discovery group whose mission it is to identify and characterise the therapeutic candidates for the drug discovery programs within the Immunology and musculoskeletal area.

You will employ your expertise in biochemistry/protein sciences/molecular pharmacology to design and develop biochemical assays to interrogate a broad range of protein classes (enzymes, receptors, PPIs).  These assays will be designed to be relevant to the desired modality for the project, including antibodies and small molecules, agonists and antagonists.

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate will split their time between the office and the lab and apply their experience designing assays with plate reader-based readouts (such as fluorescence intensity, FRET, luminescence and fluorescence polarisation) to deliver screening assays for projects as well as mentoring early career scientists. Equivalent experience in biophysical assays (SPR,ITC,DSF) would also be considered.

Your work will support the identification and optimisation of therapeutic molecules across small and large molecule projects, the execution of a range of primary and secondary in vitro studies aimed at the functional characterisation of these entities and application of novel technologies to provide understanding and enable prosecution of the best targets.

You will have an in-depth knowledge off assay statistics gained from a HTS/iterative screening background, graphing software (such as Excel-fit or GraphPad Prism) as well as being able to communicate screening data to multidisciplinary project teams.

Effective teamwork and collaboration skills will be essential to partner within project teams, and to ensure delivery of high-quality in vitro data. You may also be required to co-ordinate activities at CROs from transferring assays to data collection and interpretation. Our scientists are encouraged to build on their professional networks and are expected to publish their data and present at relevant meetings and conferences.

Essential Requirements

The Applicant must have a strong scientific background with a PhD and or equivalent experience gained in industry or a similar laboratory setting. They must have expertise in plate-based assay biology and direct experience of designing, developing, optimising and prosecuting biochemical assays in a range of formats. This will include experience of pharmacological analysis and statistics relevant to in vitro screens. Experience with relevant software tools, statistics, liquid handling and automation will be an advantage. Knowledge of the bone, fibrosis or immunology disease areas is desirable. Experience of previous outsource work management would be advantageous but not essential.

The successful candidate should thrive in a team environment and be adaptable to changing project and organisational priorities. They will also be a strong communicator who is willing to discuss their own ideas and constructively challenge the ideas of others in departmental and wider company settings. In addition, the candidate should readily exchange feedback with colleagues.

In addition to technical skills, ideally the individual will be a highly-motivated and ambitious scientist who will be keen to maximise their impact on project delivery. They will influence scientifically and operationally at both a project level and within IB Discovery and increase UCB’s profile through publications in well-respected journals.

We can offer you a very friendly company and a scientifically stimulating environment, bringing the best technologies and best scientists together for prosecuting cutting-edge science. There is always space for learning and taking on new challenges in order to deliver innovative new medicines. A fantastic place to work which values science and people.

Career development includes leadership opportunities, which could involve becoming a project champion, a role which requires representation of the department at project meetings, implementing critical path screening cascades, as well as internal coordination of IB Discovery resources. Additionally, you will also provide scientific leadership within the projects you are working on and to colleagues within the department, including mentoring opportunities.
